Many crafters all around the world knit and crochet for charities and good causes.
There is a joy in the making – and a further joy in
gifting to others.
The best way to get involved is to find somewhere
local who will welcome your donations. This might include hospitals, special
care baby units, care homes, refuges, churches, charity groups, animal rescue
centres, baby banks or food banks. Giving locally helps your own community, and
saves on the cost, and logistics involved to make sure your donations get to
where they are needed.
There are of course international
appeals from time to time - and if you can get the items you make to a local
drop off point - this can be a great thing to consider.
Here are a few suggestions of where you
might donate your Charitable Knitting & Crochet.
And I have added the links to some
popular and suitable patterns below to give you some ideas.
Hospitals and Special Care Baby Units often welcome donations of
baby hats and cardigans – preemie and newborn.
But – it is important to find out what can/cannot be donated. Most
settings have their own specifications of style, size etc. Sending them items
they cannot use is wasteful to everyone. Some hospitals in the UK simply bin
what they cannot use – the days of ‘any hat is better than no hat’ are long
gone. Hospitals are very strict on what they will use – including no pom-poms
or embellishments etc. Many require cardigans to have long sleeves and be
fully-buttoned. It is always best to
check what they need or can store. There are several good fb groups who have
local co-ordinators who check regularly with hospitals and baby units to ensure
that the donations they are sent are suitable. Please don’t just send what you
like to make – busy maternity nurses just don’t have the time to deal with more
work load than they already have!
Pre-school Playgroups and Nurseries may welcome doll’s clothes - and hats
& mittens (toddlers are great at losing theirs!)
Women’s Refuges ~ Imagine fleeing from a violent situation
and having to leave everything behind!
Homeless Shelters and Refuges may welcome hats, scarves, cowls, gloves,
socks, and blankets
Hospices may welcome blankets
Care Homes for the Elderly may welcome blankets and twiddle muffs
Funeral Directors may welcome tiny outfits for babies
born too soon. No family is ever prepared for such a sad situation.
Animal Rescue Centres may welcome blankets
Local Charity Groups ~ find out what is in your
neighbourhood !
