Thousands of knitters have enjoyed making my now famous
'All-in-One Baby Top'.
I see them everywhere on the net.
Each one is a little different ~ depending on the yarn used, additional fancy stitches or edgings, and the buttons and trimmings ~ and each and every one of them looks so cute!
It has been my most popular pattern ever.
I have been asked many times for a version with sleeves. I know several people have adapted the pattern - but somehow I just didn't think they looked so cute with sleeves. I have tried over and over to make a pattern I was happy with - and at last my perseverance paid off!
I love the way this looks. Yipee......... Hope you all like it too?
Can't wait to see the first one made from my new instructions.

Top-Down with Long Sleeves 0
– 3 months
Yarn – any DK (tension 22sts over 4”/10cm)
Needles – 4mm throughout
Requires 3 small buttons
Worked from the neck downwards
Tips:
· yfwd – yarn forward seems to be a very UK term – you may know this as yo (yarn over) or yrn (yarn round needle). This makes the buttonholes and also the little eyelet holes on the yoke and at the lower edge
· m1 (make 1) on row 31 – I do this by knitting into the front & back of a stitch – some knitters pick up the bar of yarn from the previous row – either way will be OK
· if you are making this for a girl you may prefer to make the buttonholes at the end of the row

Well done you clever thing you, it looks great Marianna thank you for another great pattern, love the little ribbed hat too. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda. So many people have asked me for a version with sleeves - and I have tried over and over. Sometimes it takes ages to 'get it right' !
DeleteI think these are being knitted for charities all round the world. Makes me feel happy.
I love knitting these cardigan in one piece as I hate sewing so it's way better I use to never knit cardigan now u can't stop me would love different stitches thanks so much

DeleteMy first baby sweater. Hope it turns out as nice as the photo. Thanks for the free pattern.
DeleteNo wonder it is popular because it is so cute!!! Definitely I need to make one soon... Thanks for the instructions, Marianna :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Marianna. This certainly has become everybody's favorite & I love how versatile it is. We can do so many different stitches in it & it always comes out beautiful. I have added sleeves to the original pattern by picking up stitches around the armholes, but, this is much nicer!! You are so clever!
ReplyDeleteDo you have the pattern for 6, 12, and toddler size with long sleeves? All I saw was the 0-3 months. Unless I am missing something. Just love your pattern. I have made the toddler size sweater without the sleeves and I loved it. But wanted to do the toddler size with sleeves. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteHi Marianna. What a beautiful little sweater! I am also interested in making this sweater in a larger size. Do you have the pattern in 6, 9 and 12 months? Thank you so much!
DeleteI would like to knit this in 12 month and toddler size. Do you have a pattern for these 2 sizes? I have an 8 month old grandson with a 20 inch head. Nothing I make is big enough. I need toddler size at least. Thank you for getting back to me.
DeleteTry knitting it in Chunky yarn!
DeleteHi Marianna. What a beautiful little sweater! I am also interested in making this sweater in a larger size. Do you have the pattern in 6, 9 and 12 months? Thank you so much!

ReplyDeleteLove this top. Have you done it in premature size please?
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern, thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteJust finish making tge long sleeve sweater and matching hat in gray with soft pink buttons. Looks fantastic! I'm a beginner and I found this pattern easy to follow. Plan on knitting more in different colors. Thanks Marianne!
ReplyDeleteHow would I make this for a 1 year old?
ReplyDeleteThanks x
This sweater is so cute. I'm up to picking up the 33 stitches to make the long sleeves and I have a question. Do you rejoin the yarn by casting on 2 stitches to the right needle and then purl the 33 stitches and then cast on 2 more or do you rejoin the yarn and then cast on 2 stitches to the left needle and purl a total of 37 stitches ( the 2 stitches added on each end and the original 33? Thanks for any help.
ReplyDeleteI have made this in the sleeveless version. I would also like instructions for this version with sleeves for a 9 - 12 month old
ReplyDeleteThanks
Paula
ReplyDeleteWould you be able to provide the 12 mos. size with long sleeves? I love this pattern and I'm sure I'll make it many times if I can get the larger sized pattern. Thank you for sharing your time and talent.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI am new to knitting and was wondering if this pattern is worked using circular needles?
Thank you for any help offered!
Birda
Thank you Colleen. I will give it a go and let you know how I get on. :-)
ReplyDeleteDear Marianne
ReplyDeleteI´m very interested in this pattern (with or without slevees). Unfortunally, I cannot fully understand the instructions in english, since I'm from latinoamerica. Could you please send me an Spanish version of it (of course only if you count with it)?. I would be very greatfully.
Thanks a lot
Sofia
I love this pattern but wonder if you might consider publishing it in toddler sizes like you did the sleeveless version. I made the sleeveless one for my granddaughter and her mom loved so much that she asked if I could do one with long sleeves. Thanks for all your great patterns.
ReplyDeleteWith regards to Row 29 on the 0-3m size: I queried this as was ending up with 4sts unaccounted for, a couple of ladies responded on Ravelry forum and it now makes complete sense:
ReplyDeleteBasically you need to “reset” between each set of instructions. So K23. Now cast off 2 stitches, as if you were doing it at the start of a row - do NOT use any of the stitches you already knit.
In this process of casting off you will actually need to knit three stitches, and the last of the three does NOT count as the first one of the next set. Now knit another 25 (when the next row talks about 26 stitches for the sleeve, it is these 25 plus the one left over after you cast off 2 just before). Now cast off another two (which involves knitting three again) then knit 40 (which gives you the 41 for the next row). And so on.
Four sets of casting off in the row = your four unaccounted-for stitches.
I wanted to share this, so others could continue with the pattern with ease :)
This is so helpful, thanks so much for posting! I had the same issue with the 6mo size, and now I know what I was doing wrong. Math works now, yay!
DeleteAlso just wanted to comment on Row 31, as I see a few people have been having problems with that one also. I ended up with the correct 113sts after doing this row and I used the knitting term M1 (make 1) instead of kfb (knit into front and back of st). I found knitting into front and back of st creates 2 stitches and making 1, creates the extra 1 st you need. To see how to do both, you tube have good tutorials. Hope this helps with anyone having problems :)
ReplyDeleteAloha,I am going to make the long sleeved version for a little baby who lives in Hawaii, and is visiting the mainland during Christmas. Will convert it to the short sleeved version once she comes back to Hawaii. I do not seem to be able to find yardage needed. Can you please tell me how much yarn I will need for the 6 mo. long sleeved version? Many thanks!!!!! Stephanie
ReplyDeleteI would love to make this for my 4 year old granddaughter. Do you have it in larger sizes??
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Nancy
Marianna I loved the pattern and I am making the blue sweater. I am unable to understand this. Can you please tell me how do I do this = s1, psso,
ReplyDeleteHi Zephyr,
Deletes1, psso =
slip the next stitch from the left needle back to your right needle, without knitting it.
Knit the next stitch on the left needle as usual.
Then go back to the slipped stitch sitting on your right needle and pass it back, over the knitted stitch.
By passing this slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, you have decreased one stitch.
Got it? :)
You haven't mentioned the quantity of wool you need for each cardigan.

Just finished this. Thanks for the great pattern! I used very fine baby yarn and it came out as a newborn size...exactly what I had hoped :) I also knitted the sleeves on 3 needles to avoid seems.
ReplyDeleteI, like others would like to see this pattern in larger sizes for children 24plus months.

ReplyDeleteHi Marianna,
ReplyDeleteI am eager to start knitting this lovely pattern for my new granddaughter. I can't seem to find how much yarn it will take for the sizes unless I have missed it :)

ReplyDeleteI’m new to knitting and I’m struggling with row 30. I’ve put the 26 stitches on a holder and do I just carry on knitting without leaving any extra wool. It seems a tight pull across due to the stitch holder
ReplyDeleteThank you for these free beautiful patterns. A small group of us where I work, are making these for prem babies for our local hospital. So it really helps out where we can get free patterns. So a big thank you from New Zealand.

The sweater looks adorable, but I'm not seeing anywhere how much yarn it takes for a 6 month long sleeve sweater. Can anyone tell me how much to buy? Thanks.
