Lace Cable Baby Cardigan

This cute little baby cardigan is knitted in the traditional way - Back, Left Front, Right Front and Sleeves.   Then joined together, and the Neckband added.

This is not the way I write most of my patterns - usually I design them to be all-in-one as far as possible to minimize the seaming.

However, this little cardi is worth the effort in my opinion!

Lace Cable Baby Cardigan

I have been asked to share this pattern many times. And I did try to write an all-in-one version, but it got too complicated!

You can use DK or 4ply yarn for this design

Knitted in DK it fits a baby of around 12 months of age (22" chest) ~~~ but please note 1 x 100g ball of DK acrylic yarn might not be enough !

Knitted in 4ply and 3.25mm needles it fits a baby of around 3 - 6 months (18" chest)
Knitted in 4ply and 3.5mm needles it fits a baby of around 6 - 9 months (19.5" chest)

The borders can be worked in rib or garter stitch - you choose.

However, the lacy cable requires a bit of concentration, so I don't really recommend this pattern for a beginner knitter.

If you would like to knit this little lacy cable cardigan  ....... you will find the pattern in my Ravelry Store

and I will add it to Etsy too later today.  Happy knitting.

How To Join Underarms Neatly

Both my Top-Down and Bottom-Up cardigans are very popular with knitters all around the world. The ease of knitting, and the fact that they require very little seaming is a big bonus.

But joining the underarm area gives some knitters problems. So I thought I would add some tips and photos to help you.

Bottom-Up Cardigans and Sweaters

How To Join the Underarm ~

  • Join the sleeve seam first - from the cuff upwards to the top of the sleeve
  • There are 3 cast off stitches at each side of the sleeve seam - join these 6  stitches in a straight line with the 6 cast off stitches at the underarm of the main body part by oversewing (I used a contrast colour in some of the photos below to guide you where to go)
  • Darn away the tail of yarn down the sleeve seam for a few inches, and cut off the yarn

Top-Down Cardigans and Sweaters

How To Join the Underarm ~

  •  Join the sleeve seam first - from the cuff upwards
  •  When you get to the underarm gap - run the needle and yarn in and out around the gap (I used a contrast colour in some of the photos below to guide you where to go)
  •  Pull gently to gather the underarm area together
  •  Darn away the tail of yarn down the sleeve seam for a few inches, and cut off the yarn
