Babbity Baby Hats in 3 colours

I have knitted dozens of Babbity Baby Hats - in all sorts of colour combinations !

They always look good.

This version uses 3 colours - and is a great way of using up small oddments of yarn left over from other projects.


Babbity Baby Hats in 3 colours

Sizes:

Very small preemie, small preemie, medium preemie, large preemie, newborn, 0 – 3 months and around 6 months


Tension / Gauge:

22sts = 4” (10cm)

 

Requirements ~

DK yarn in 3 complementary colours

4mm needles

Very Small Premature Baby –  7″ circumference,  3½″ high

Requires around 6g - 8g of acrylic DK yarn

Instructions:

Using colour 1, cast on 36sts

1st  Row:    Join in colour 2 and knit across the row

2nd Row:    Join in colour 3 and knit across the row

3rd Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

4th Row:    Using colour 2, knit across the row

5th Row:    Using colour 3, knit across the row

Repeat the last 3 rows three times more

15th Row:    Using colour 1 or 3, knit across the row, and continue in this colour only

16th Row:    S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows four times more

 

Shape the Top ~

Next Row:      *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (29sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (22sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (15sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      K2tog across row to last st, k1                           (8sts)                              

Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up)

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends

 

Small  Premature Baby –  8″ circumference,  4″ high

Requires around 8g - 10g of acrylic DK yarn

Instructions:

Using colour 1, cast on 41sts

1st  Row:    Join in colour 2 and knit across the row

2nd Row:    Join in colour 3 and knit across the row

3rd Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

4th Row:    Using colour 2, knit across the row

5th Row:    Using colour 3, knit across the row

Repeat the last 3 rows four times more

18th Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

19th Row:    Using colour 1 or 2, knit across the row, and continue in this colour only

20th Row:    S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows four times more


Shape the Top ~

Next Row:      *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (33sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (25sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (17sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      K2tog across row to last st, k1                            (9sts)                             

Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up)

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.



Medium Premature Baby –  9″ circumference, 4½″ high

Requires around 12g - 14g of acrylic DK yarn

Instructions:

Using colour 1, cast, cast on 46sts

1st  Row:    Join in colour 2 and knit across the row

2nd Row:    Join in colour 3 and knit across the row

3rd Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

4th Row:    Using colour 2, knit across the row

5th Row:    Using colour 3, knit across the row

Repeat the last 3 rows five times more

21st Row:    Using colour 1 or 3, knit across the row, and continue in this colour only

22nd Row:    S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows five times more

 

Shape the Top ~

Next Row:      *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (37sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (28sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (19sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      K2tog across row to last st, k1                           (10sts)                             

Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up)

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.



Large  Premature Baby –  10″ circumference, 5″ high

Requires around 14g - 16g of acrylic DK yarn

Instructions:

Using colour 1, cast on 51sts

1st  Row:    Join in colour 2 and knit across the row

2nd Row:    Join in colour 3 and knit across the row

3rd Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

4th Row:    Using colour 2, knit across the row

5th Row:    Using colour 3, knit across the row

Repeat the last 3 rows five times more

21st Row:    Using colour 1 or 3, knit across the row, and continue in this colour only

22nd Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows 7 times more

 

Shape the Top ~

Next Row:      *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (41sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (31sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (21sts)

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      K2tog across row to last st, k1                           (11sts)                             

Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up)

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.



Newborn Baby –  11″ circumference, 5½″ high

Requires around 16g - 18g of acrylic DK yarn

Instructions:

Using colour 1, cast on 56sts

1st Row:    Join in colour 2 and knit across the row

2nd Row:    Join in colour 3 and knit across the row

3rd Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

4th Row:    Using colour 2, knit across the row

5th Row:    Using colour 3, knit across the row

Repeat the last 3 rows seven times more

27th Row:    Using colour 1 or 3, knit across the row, and continue in this colour only

28th Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows six times more

Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:      *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (34sts)

0 – 3 Months Baby –  12″ circumference, 5¾″   high

Requires around 18g - 20g of acrylic DK yarn 

Instructions:

Using colour 1, cast on 64sts

1st Row:    Join in colour 2 and knit across the row

2nd Row:    Join in colour 3 and knit across the row

3rd Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

4th Row:    Using colour 2, knit across the row

5th Row:    Using colour 3, knit across the row

Repeat the last 3 rows seven times more

27th Row:    Using colour 1 or 3, knit across the row, and continue in this colour only

28th Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows six times more    

 

Shape the Top ~

1st  Row:     *K5, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                (55sts)
2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th  and 10th Rows:    S1, purl to last st, k1
3rd  Row:     *K4, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                (46sts)
5th  Row:     *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                (37sts)
7th  Row:     *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                (28sts)
9th  Row      *K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                (19sts)
11th Row     K2tog across row to last st, k1                            (10sts)
Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up)

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.

 

 

6 Months Baby –  13″ circumference, 6¼″ high

Requires around 20g - 22g of acrylic DK yarn

Instructions:

Using colour 1, cast on 70sts

1st Row:    Join in colour 2 and knit across the row

2nd Row:    Join in colour 3 and knit across the row

3rd Row:    Using colour 1, knit across the row

4th Row:    Using colour 2, knit across the row

5th Row:    Using colour 3, knit across the row

Repeat the last 3 rows seven times more

27th Row:    Using colour 1 or 3, knit across the row, and continue in this colour only

28th Row:    S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows seven times more, increasing one stitch at end of last row            (71sts)    

 

Shape the Top  ~
1st  Row:     *K5, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                61sts
2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th Rows:    S1, purl to last st, k1
3rd  Row:     *K4, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               51sts
5th  Row:     *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               41sts
7th  Row:     *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               31sts
9th  Row:     *K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               21sts
11th  Row     K2tog across row to last st, k1                         11sts

12th Row:    S1, purl to last st, k1
