SOPHIE Baby Hat

If you have recently knitted the Sophie Baby Cardigan Jacket, you might like to knit a matching hat. Instructions below for 2 sizes.

SOPHIE Baby Hat


Large Premature / Small Newborn Baby Hat           10½″ circumference, 4¾“ high

 
DK yarn ~ around 10-12g

4mm needles

 
Cast on 58sts 

Knit 6 rows

Continue in pattern ~

Row 1:   S1, knit to end

Row 2:   S1, purl to last st, k1

Row 3:   S1, k1* yrn, p1, p3tog, p1, yon, k2, repeat from * to end
Row 4:   S1, purl to last st, k1

 
The last 4 rows form the pattern

 
Repeat these 4 rows four times more

 
Row 27:   S1, knit to end

Row 28:   S1, purl to last sts, k2tog                              57sts

 

         
Shape Crown

 
1st Row:         (K5, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1               49sts
2nd, 4th,6th, 8th, 10th  Rows:  S1, purl to last st, k1
3rd  Row:       (K4, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1               41sts
5th  Row:       (K3, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1               33sts
7th  Row:       (K2, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1               25sts
9th  Row         (K1, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1               17sts
11th Row        (k2tog) repeat to last st, k1              9sts


 
Cut off yarn, leaving a tail.

Thread tail onto a needle and pass through remaining stitches. Pull to gather up.

Sew side seam. Weave in ends.

 

 

Newborn – 3 months  Baby Hat           12″ circumference,   5½ - 6“ high

 
SOPHIE Baby Hat       0 - 3 months

DK yarn ~ around 12-14g

4mm needles

 

Cast on 65sts

 
Knit 6 rows

 
Continue in pattern ~

 
Row 1:   S1, knit to end

Row 2:   S1, purl to last st, k1

Row 3:   S1, k1* yrn, p1, p3tog, p1, yon, k2, repeat from * to end
Row 4:   S1, purl to last st, k1

 
The last 4 rows form the pattern

 
Repeat these 4 rows five times more

 
Row 31:   S1, knit to end

Row 32:   S1, purl to last st, k1

 


Shape Crown

1st  Row:        (K6, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                         57sts
2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th  Rows:  S1, purl to last st, k1
3rd  Row:       (K5, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                        49sts
5th  Row:       (K4, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                        41sts
7th  Row:       (K3, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                        33sts
9th  Row:       (K2, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                        25sts
11th Row        (K1, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                        17sts
12th Row        (P2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                 9sts


Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up), draw the end through all stitches, pull up tightly.

Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.

Cut off yarn, leaving a tail.

Thread tail onto a needle and pass through remaining stitches. Pull to gather up.

Sew side seam. Weave in ends.
