Fair Isle Effect Toddler Hat & Mittens

Just love this little hat and mittens - perfect for pre-school toddlers.

The pretty yarn (Sirdar Crofter DK) does all the work !!


Fair Isle Effect Toddler Hat & Mittens


It's a wool/cotton/acrylic blend combining the warmth, smoothness and washability of all three.



Easy Fair Isle Effect Toddler Hat

This hat is worked flat.

Requirements:

Sirdar Crofter DK yarn (or other equivalent colour change yarn)

3.25mm and 4mm needles

Tension:

22sts = 10cm (4")

Instructions:

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 89sts

1st Row: S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last 2sts, k2

2nd Row: S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end

Repeat these 2 rows 6 times more

Change to 4mm needles and work in stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl) until hat measures 12cm (4 3/4") from cast on edge

Shape top -

1st Row:  * K6, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1   (78sts)

2nd & all alternate rows:  P

3rd Row:  * K5, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1   (67sts)

5th Row:  * K4, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1   (56sts)

7th Row:  * K3, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1   (45sts)

9th Row:  * K2, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1   (34sts)

11th Row:  * K1, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1   (23sts)

13th Row:  * K2tog, rep from * to last st, k1   (12sts)

14th Row:  * P2tog, rep from * to end   (6sts)

Cut yarn, leaving a tail to use for sewing up the side seam.

Draw yarn through remaining 6sts. Fasten off. Sew seam.

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 29sts
 
CUFF
 
1st Row: S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last 2sts, k2
 
2nd Row: S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end
 
Repeat these 2 rows 6 times more
 
Change to 4mm needles
 
HAND
 
1st Row: Knit, increasing in the first and last stitches (31sts)
 
2nd & all alternate rows:  Purl
 
3rd Row:  K14, inc in next 2sts, k15  (33sts)
 
5th Row:  K14, inc in next st, k2, inc in next st, k15  (35sts)
 
7th Row:  K14, inc in next st, k4, inc in next st, k15  (37sts)
 
9th Row:  K14, inc in next st, k6, inc in next st, k15  (39sts)
 
11th Row:  K14, inc in next st, k8, inc in next st, k15  (41sts)
 
12th Row: P26, turn
 
THUMB
 
K11, turn
 
Working on these centre 11sts only work a further 5 rows

K2tog, k2tog, k2tog, k2tog, k3tog

Cut off yarn leaving a tail. Draw a needle through these 5sts. Draw up tightly and fasten off.

TOP

With wrong side facing, rejoin yarn to last 15sts left on the needle, purl 15

Continue on 30sts, - work 4 rows

SHAPE TOP

1st Row:  S1, s1, k1, psso, k9, k2tog, k2, s1, k1, psso, k9, k2tog, k1

2nd Row: and all following even rows – Purl

3rd Row:  S1, s1, k1, psso, k7, k2tog, k2, s1, k1, psso, k7, k2tog, k1

5th Row:  S1, s1, k1, psso, k5, k2tog, k2, s1, k1, psso, k5, k2tog, k1

7th Row:  S1, s1, k1, psso, k3, k2tog, k2, s1, k1, psso, k3, k2tog, k1

8th Row: Cast off purlwise. Join the thumb seam, top and side seam.

    1. Yes Denise - I do knit fast - I am always making something !!
      I rip out half of what I try out - but the half that makes it is satisfying. Another new project is always a joy to me. !!!
      Then I usually donate what I make to charity. Everyone wins.
