Bella Baby Jacket

I try to alternate knitting & crochet projects ~ it's more interesting, and I think it helps to reduce the strain on my fingers, hands & shoulders.

Here is my first knitting of 2014 - a pretty little baby jacket for a newborn baby.

DK yarn

4mm needles

3 small buttons

JACKET

Begin with the Sleeves (work 2)

Cast on 25sts

Work 6 rows in garter stitch   (knit every row)

Work 26 rows in stocking stitch, increasing 1 stitch at each end of 3^rd,  7^th and 11^th rows   (31sts)

The sleeve should now measure about 5” – you can add more rows if required

Next Row:  Cast off 3sts, work to last 3sts, cast off 3sts   (25sts)

Leave these 25 stitches on a spare needle

Work the Main Part

Cast on 95sts

Work 6 rows in garter stitch

 Work in pattern as follows ~

1^st Row:  Knit to end

2^nd Row:  K5, purl to last 5sts, k5

3^rd Row:  K10, yfwd, sl1, k2tog, psso, yfwd, *k5, yfwd, sl1, k2tog, psso, yfwd; rep from * to last 10sts, k10

4^th Row:  K5, purl to last 5sts, k5

Repeat these 4 rows 7 times more

Then work the 1^st & 2^nd rows once

Keeping the first & last 5sts of every row as knit stitches throughout, continue as follows ~

Next Row: Work 22sts, cast off 6sts, work 38sts, cast off 6sts, work to end

Next Row:  Knit 22sts from the right front, 25sts from the first sleeve, 39sts from the back, 25sts from the second sleeve and 22sts from left front    (133 stitches)

Work the Yoke

1^st Row:  Knit 66sts, k2tog, knit to end of row   (132sts)

2^nd Row:  Knit

3rd Row:  K1, k2tog, yfwd, k2 (for buttonhole), *(k2, k2tog), repeat from * to last 7sts, k7   (102sts)

Knit 3 rows

7th Row:  K5, *(k2tog, k7), repeat from * to last 7sts, k2tog, k5     (91sts)

Knit 3 rows

11^th Row:  K8, *(k2tog, k7), repeat from * to last 2sts, k2                         (82sts)

Knit 3 rows

15^th Row:  K1, k2tog, yfwd, k2 (for buttonhole), k3, *(k2tog, k6), repeat from * to last 2sts, k2    (73sts)

Knit 3 rows

19^th Row:  K7, *(k2tog, k6), repeat from * to last 2sts, k2                            (65sts)

Knit 3 rows

23^rd  Row:  K7, *(k2tog, k6), repeat from * to last 2sts, k2                          (58sts)

Knit 3 rows

27^th Row:  K1, k2tog, yfwd, k2 (for buttonhole), knit to end of row

Knit 2 rows

Cast off loosely

To Finish

Join sleeve and underarm seams

Darn away ends

Sew on buttons

Width:          20½″

DK yarn ~ around 90g

4mm needles

3 small buttons

Begin with the Sleeves (work 2)

Cast on 29sts

Work 8 rows in garter stitch          (knit every row)

Work 42 rows in stocking stitch, increasing 1 stitch at each end of 3^rd, 7^th,11^th ,15^th, 19^th and 23^rd rows     (41sts)

The sleeve should now measure about 6½” – you can add more rows if required

Next Row:     Cast off 3sts, work to lst 3sts, cast off 3sts                  (35sts)

Leave these 35 stitches on a stitch holder for later

Work the Main Part

Cast on 119sts 

Work 8 rows in garter stitch

Work in pattern as follows ~

1^st Row:        Knit to end

2^nd Row:       K5, purl to last 5sts, k5

3^rd Row:        K10, yfwd, sl1, k2tog, psso, yfwd, *k5, yfwd, sl1, k2tog, psso, yfwd; rep from * to last 10sts, k10

4^th Row:        K5, purl to last 5sts, k5

Repeat these 4 rows 8 times more

Then work the 1^st & 2^nd rows once

Keeping the first & last 5sts of every row as knit stitches throughout, continue as follows ~

Next Row: Work 28sts, cast off 6sts, work 50sts, cast off 6sts, work to end

Next Row:  Knit 28sts from the right front, 35sts from the first sleeve, 51sts from the back, 35sts from the second sleeve and 28sts from left front                (177sts) 

Work the Yoke

1^st Row:        K2, * k5, k2tog, repeat from * to last 7sts, k7               (153sts)

2^nd Row:       Knit

3rd Row:       K1, k2tog, yfwd, k2 (for buttonhole), knit to end

Knit 13 rows

17th Row:     K8, *k2tog, k3, rep from * to last 5sts, k5                     (125sts)

Knit 1 row

19th Row:     K1, k2tog, yfwd, k2 (for buttonhole), knit to end

Knit 7 rows

27^th Row:      K7, *(k2tog, k2), repeat from * to last 6sts, k6              (97sts)

Knit 3 rows

31^st Row:      K7, *(k2tog, k1), repeat from * to last 6sts, k6              (69sts)

Knit 3 rows

35^th Row:      K1, k2tog, yfwd, k2 (for buttonhole), *(k2tog, k5), repeat from * to last st, k1     (60sts)

Knit 4 rows

Cast off loosely

To Finish

Join sleeve and underarm seams

Darn away ends

Sew on buttons
