  1. Thanks for sharing your experience in this blog. Hand knitted baby hat patterns look so cool and babies love it too.

  2. Thank you for inclouding so many sizes for this hat. I am making hats for premature babies in Africa who have a hard time dealing with life in general and making it in life. God bless you for your endeavors and for sharing your design with us at no cost.

  4. To Grandma Carol: YON and YRN are yarn overs. This link does a nice description of yarn overs between purl and knit stitches. http://sarahclements.com/2011/03/27/knitting/yarn-over-term-confusion/

  5. I CO 37 stitches for the medium preemie hat and have worked through the pattern row 6. When I get to the end of row there are 4 stitches remaining after the knit 3 together. The same thing happened in the previous two rows where there was an extra stitch beyond the last 3 of p2, k1 or k3. Is the cast on number of stitches accurate or is there something missing in the pattern? This is a cute hat, but the pattern is not working.

    1. I am getting the same results as you. Did you ever get a reply or were you able to figure out where we are going wrong?

    2. Also, I went to the site that Joanne referred Grandma Carol to (and several others) and it specifically states YRN is done between 2 purls stitches. That might be some my problem.

    4. I also I have a problem with this pattern. Can someone please post how many stitches I should have at the end of each row? This may help in figuring out the pattern.

    5. I had an issue at first also. The pattern repeat ends with a yon .... if you forget the last one before the last 3 stitches, you will always be short a stitch.

    6. I am currently knitting the newborn size hat - at the end of row 3 there are 89 stitches which reverts back to 55 stitches on row 6. Hope this helps Brian Beckwith

  6. Beautiful hat. Love the pattern..it makes a change not to have to do ribbing which is the worst bit for me. Is there any chance you will be adding a jacket or bootees too? X

  8. do you ever create patterns using circular needles instead of sewing seams?

    1. You can easily convert to circular needles by simply joining the work on short circular needle and working the rows in rounds. This pattern callsfor purl rows between the decrease rows, so that you have the appearance of stockinette stitch. To preseve the look, simply knit the purl rows, since when working in the round you are always working on the right side. I've also made this hat and sewn the seem only part way, so I could add ribbon ties and turn it into a bonnet .... quite cute. Ope this helps.

  12. You will notice that each size has 6 more stitches and half an inch more pattern length than the one before it. I have successfully used this change to adjust the pattern for larger babies.

    2. Me too! The only surprise I got was that I had dropped a stitch a few rows down. I was able to correct it though. Now I am just about to sew it all together. I just did the little surprise jacket last month, in pale yellow. My son and DIL had a baby girl last week so now I have the matching hat and can girlie it up with a flower!
