Baby Pinafore Dress

I hope you like my latest pattern - 

a cute pinafore dress for a baby girl of around 6 months

It is really simple to knit -
but I have added a variation using a lacey stitch too - you choose  :)
or add your own stitch to the skirt part

PIPPI Pinafore Dress


Size:   To fit a baby of around 6months              Width – 20”             Length – 14 ½ “

Requirements:         DK yarn ~ 75g                   4½ mm needles                 2 buttons


                                                                     * * * * *

The Front

Cast on 74sts.         

Work 8 rows in garter stitch (knit every row)

9th Row:        Knit

10th Row:       Purl

Repeat the last 2 rows 24 times more


OR ~ for a lacy dress

9th Row:        Knit

10th Row:       Purl

11th Row:       *k4, yon, sl1, k2tog, psso, yon, rep from * to last 4sts, k4

12th Row:       Purl

Repeat the last 4 rows 11 times more

Repeat 9th & 10th row once more

Continue as follows –

(add 4, 8, or 12 more rows if you want a longer length dress)


Next Row:     *K2tog, k1, repeat from * to last 2sts, k2tog                 49sts

Next Row:     S1, knit to end

Work 6 rows in garter stitch (knit every row)

Cast off 4sts at the beg of the next 2 rows                                                41sts

K2 tog, knit to last 2sts, k2tog                                                        39sts

K2 tog, knit to last 2sts, k2tog                                                        37sts

Knit 17 rows

(wrong side)  K11, cast off 15sts, k10


Continue on first front strap –

Knit 17 rows.  Cast off.

Continue on second front strap – rejoin yarn

Knit 17 rows.  Cast off.

The Back

Cast on 74sts.         

Work 8 rows in garter stitch (knit every row)

9th Row:        Knit

10th Row:       Purl

Repeat the last 2 rows 24 times more

OR ~ for a lacy dress

9th Row:        Knit

10th Row:       Purl

11th Row:       *k4, yon, sl1, k2tog, psso, yon, rep from * to last 4sts, k4

12th Row:       Purl

Repeat the last 4 rows 11 times more

Repeat 9th & 10th row once more

Continue as follows –

(add 4, 8, or 12 more rows if you added them to the front)

Next Row:     *K2tog, k1, repeat from * to last 2sts, k2tog                 49sts

Next Row:     S1, knit to end

Work 6 rows in garter stitch (knit every row)

Cast off 4sts at the beg of the next 2 rows                                      41sts

K2 tog, knit to last 2sts, k2tog                                                        39sts

K2 tog, knit to last 2sts, k2tog                                                        37sts

Knit 33 rows

(wrong side)  K11, cast off 15sts, k10


Continue on first  back strap –

Knit 10 rows

K4, k2 tog, yarn over needle, k5  (this makes  a button hole)

K2 tog, knit to last 2sts, k2 tog. Repeat this row 3 times more (3sts)

Slip 1, k2 tog, pass slipped st over

Cut off yarn. Pull yarn through & fasten off

Rejoin yarn to second  back strap –

Knit 10 rows

K4, k2 tog, yarn over needle, k5  (this makes  a button hole)

K2 tog, knit to last 2sts, k2 tog.

Repeat this row 3 times more (3sts)

Slip 1, k2 tog, pass slipped st over

Cut off yarn. Pull yarn through & fasten off

Join side seam.    Darn away ends.  

Sew on 2 buttons

Add a little embroidery, a motif, ribbon bow or flower if desired

  4. In row 11 above what does yon mean?

    1. yon (yarn over needle) makes an extra stitch - you may know this as yo (yarn over), or yrn (yarn over needle)

  10. Thank you so much Marianna for your excellent patterns. I really like the way they are laid out and easy on your eyes. Some patterns give me eye strain because they are too small and squashed up.

  13. I am new to knitting and have recently been following your preemie range to knit clothes for my granddaughters dolls. For a learner your patterns are easy to follow. Will you be doing this pattern in an xs preemie size.
