These little sleepers are for premature babies - I chose a simple style, as I didn't want to overwhelm a delicate tiny baby with too much decoration.
The addition of some really pretty buttons and ribbon is enough to give a special touch.
Tiny Topaz Premature Baby Sleeper |
If you are making these for dolls, then of course you can use any yarn you choose,
but if you are making these for hospitals or charity groups -
please check with them first to find out if these sleepers are suitable - or if there are any special requirements that you should consider.
I imagine that this little sleeper may be used by a neonatal unit
to give to the bereaved parents of a pre-term baby who do not have clothes that are small enough to fit.
Very tiny babies that are born too soon are very delicate, so it is important that the sleeper is easy to put on - hence the buttons all the way down.
If the gown is to be used in this way then any decoration may be used.
Tiny Angel Sizes can be made by using 4ply yarn instead of DK.
Tiny Topaz Premature Baby Sleeper |
However - if the sleeper is to be used for a premature, small or early baby - you may need to consider important factors .....
for example - yarn with metallic thread is not suitable,
and the hospital may have other requirements about the yarn you use.
Some hospitals prefer self coloured yarn (not the self-patterning yarns that are so popular at the moment).

Very sweet Marianna thank you for sharing the pattern. :) xx
ReplyDeleteawesome, cant wait for the bigger sizes!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for putting this up Marianna my daughter was a premature baby (born at 36 weeks) and even the premie clothes at stores were huge on her. She was 5 lbs 14 oz when born but due to the fact that her dad and I both are naturally skinny she didn't really have any clothes that fit her to keep her warm.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post. HAVING been a Neonatal nurse for 30 plus years I can say that parents were overwhelmingly grateful for premie clothes.
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern.. Do you have something like this sleeper but in a newborn size?
ReplyDeleteI(and probably others) would be grateful if you could indicate how your sizes translate into either actual size of the baby (birth weight or length), degree of prematurity (ca. born week 32, 36,... of pregnancy), or the centilong system normally used (at least i Europe) for children's clothes (for anyone not familiar with the system, the size is indicated as the total length/height of the child which the garment is supposed to fit: 36,40, 44 for premature, 48/50, 52, 56 for newborn, etc)?
ReplyDeleteGitte (Denmark)
I think you are a wonderful lady. I love that you have taken time to do the premie sizes too. Thank you for sharing your patterns.
ReplyDeleteHow could I modify this pattern for a 0-3 month old full term baby?
