Old Shale Lace Baby Hat

'Old Shale' is a traditional Shetland lace knitting pattern ~ it was probably originally called 'Old Shell'.
It gives a pretty, light, lacy effect - no wonder it is used so much used for baby garments.

  2. Thank you for sharing the patterns for premature babies. Both of my daughters sons were born prematurely. We knew the first one was going to be premature. She was given a drug to strength his lungs and she was on complete bed rest. She was assured that her second baby would be full term. He was even more premature than the first. Each spent quite a bit of time in NICU. The second was in a very trying stage and no one told her or her husband. They just handled the baby with great caution and love. They had been through the process once and were much more at ease with the second one. You would never know that either of them had started life in a touch and go manner. Periodically I knit preemie hats for the NICU where I live. I'd like to knit some for the NICU where the boys were treated with great love and care. I had never thought about knitting a matching cardigan for some of them. That would be a great way to use my stash of yarn. I also knit chemo hats since I'm a breast cancer survivor. I don't care what kind of cancer the person has - all patients need to have some dignity. I didn't like my wig. I preferred to wear scarfs, hats or go bald. Again, thanks for sharing the wonderful patterns. Susan in Oklahoma in mid-America
