Chunky Christmas Stocking - Crochet

Requires

UK Chunky weight yarn – or 2 strands of DK knitted together

6mm hook

 

(For my stocking - I used 1 strand of white and 1 strand of red DK for the main part then 2 strands of red DK for the top border).

Any Christmas colours would also look good – or sparkly / glittery yarn

 

Terminology

This pattern is written in UK terminology

ch = chain       sl st = slip stitch          dc = crochet         

htc = half treble crochet          tc = treble crochet        

Note - The toe and heel are worked in half treble crochet, the rest of the stocking is worked in treble crochet 

 

Instructions

Chain 3 and join into a circle with a slip stitch

Round 1: Ch2, and work 5htc into circle, join with a sl st (6sts)

Round 2: Ch2, 1htc in the same st, 2htc in each st all around, sl st to join (12sts)

Round 3: Ch2, 1htc in same st, 1htc in next st, 1htc in next st, continue (2htc, 1htc, 1htc) all around, sl st to join (16sts)

Round 4: Ch2, 1htc in same stitch, 1htc in next 3sts, continue (2htc, 1htc, 1htc, 1htc) all around, sl st to join   (20sts)

Round 5: Ch2, 1htc in same stitch, 1htc in next 4sts, continue (2htc, 1htc, 1htc, 1htc, 1htc) all around, sl st to join   (24sts)

Round 6: Ch2, 1tc in each st all around   (24sts)

Repeat round 6 for 2 more rounds.  Place a stitch marker on the join.

Now work the heel -

Ch2, 1htc in next 13sts     (14sts)

Turn, ch2, htc2tog, 1htc in next 8sts, htc2tog, 1htc  (12sts)

Turn, ch2, htc2tog, 1htc in next 6sts, htc2tog, 1htc   (10sts)

Turn, ch2, htc2tog, 1htc in next 4sts, htc2tog, 1hrc   (8sts)

Turn, ch2, 1htc in each st  (8sts)

Turn, ch1, 2htc in next st, 1htc in next 4sts, 2htc in next st, 1htc   (10sts)

Turn, ch1, 2htc in next st, 1htc in next 6sts, 2htc in next st, 1htc   (12sts)

Turn, ch1, 2htc in next st, 1htc in next 8sts, 2htc in next st, 1htc   (14sts)

Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing. Fold back the heel and sew each short angled side using whip stitch. Turn right side out again.

Now work the top part of the stocking in rounds -

Round 9:  Rejoin yarn at stitch marker, Ch2, work 1tc in each st along the top of the heel, then continue working 1tc in next 10sts along the front of the foot, sl st to join into a round   (24sts)

Repeat Round 9 until your stocking measures around 8½ʺ - 8¾ʺ (22cm)

Last Round: Using a contrast colour if desired, work a round of dc all around.

Fasten off. Darn away ends. 

Add a little ribbon bow or Christmas button if desired.
