This simple hat and mittens set is made in Aran weight yarn.
It is easy and quick to knit, and perfect for the chillier days ahead!
Child’s Hat 3 - 6 years
Aran weight yarn
5.5mm needles
Tension:
4sts = 1” over the ribbing pattern, when stretched as worn
Size:
Width: 14 - 15” when
stretched as worn
Height: 7”
Cast on 61sts
Choose either a single rib or a double rib ~

Repeat the last 2rows until 5½” from the cast on
It is easy to adjust
the hat height here ~ by increasing or decreasing the number of rows.
If you want a turn up
brim – add 2” to the length here.
To shape the crown:
Row 1: S1, k2, *
k2tog, k2, repeat from * to last 2sts, k2tog
Row 2: S1, purl to last st, k1
Row 3: S1, knit to end
Row 2: S1, purl to last st, k1
Row 3: S1, knit to end
Row 4: S1, purl to last st,
k1
Row 5: S1, * k2tog, k1, repeat from * to end
Row 5: S1, * k2tog, k1, repeat from * to end

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.
With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops
and secure.
Sew up side seam and weave in ends.

stitches (25sts)
3rd Row: K11, inc in next 2 sts, k12 (27sts)
4th Row: and
all following even rows – Purl
6th Row: K11, inc in next st, k2, inc in next
st, k12 (29sts)
7th Row: K11, inc in next st, k4, inc in next
st, k12 (31sts)
9th Row: K11, inc in next st, k6, inc in next

Working on these centre 11sts only work a further 5 rows
K2tog, k2tog, k2tog, k2tog, k3tog
Cut off yarn leaving a tail. Draw a needle through these
5sts. Draw up tightly and fasten off.

With wrong side facing, rejoin yarn to last 12sts left on
the needle, purl 12
