Simple Stripes Baby Beanie Hat & Mittens

I recently added the pattern for stripey baby hats & mittens for preemie babies. I had so many positive comments about them ~ thank you.
Your lovely comments are always so much appreciated. :) 

So, here, as promised are bigger sizes ~
0 - 3 months, 6 months, and 9 - 12 months

0 - 3 months, 6 months, 9 - 12 months


Simple Stripes Baby Hat                              0 – 3 months


Size: 
Width:    6“ (15cm),   12” (30cm) all around 
Height:   5½ “ (14cm)

Requires:
DK yarn ~ around 14g, in 2 colours that look good together
4mm needles

Pattern:  
Do not cut off each yarn after knitting a stripe – just carry it loosely up the side

Using 4mm needles and colour A, cast on 63sts
1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1
2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end
Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more, increasing one stitch at end of the last row (64sts)                          
Join in colour B
Using colour B ~
11th Row:         Knit 
12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Using colour A ~
13th Row:         Knit 
14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Repeat the last 4 rows four times more

Continue in the 2 colour stripe pattern

Shape the top ~

Row 1:             * K5, k2tog, repeat from * last st, k1                                      55sts
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10:              Purl across row
Row 3:             * K4, k2tog, repeat from * to last s, k1                                   46sts  
Row 5:             * K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                  37sts
Row 7:             * K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                 28sts
Row 9:             * K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                 19sts
Row 11:           * K2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                        10sts
Row 12:              P2tog across the row                                                           5sts

 Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’ to use for sewing up
With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure
Sew up side seam and darn away ends.

Size:
Width:    5", 13cm all around 
Length:   4½ ", 11.5cm

Requires:
DK yarn ~ around 12g, in 2 colours that look good together
4mm needles

Pattern:           Make two mittens the same
Do not cut off each yarn after knitting a stripe – just carry it loosely up the side

Using 4mm needles and colour A, cast on 25sts
1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1
2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end
Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more, increasing one stitch at each end of the last row (27sts) 
Join in colour B
Using colour B ~
11th Row:         Knit 
12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Using colour A ~
13th Row:         Knit 
14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Repeat the last 4 rows three times more
Using colour B ~
27th Row:         Knit 
28th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Shape the top ~
Continue in the 2 colour stripe pattern
Next Row:    K1, s1, k1, psso, k8, k2 tog, k1, s1, k1, psso, k8, k2tog, k1                 (23sts)
Next Row:    S1, purl to last st, k1
Next Row:    K1, s1, k1, psso, k6, k2 tog, k1, s1, k1, psso, k6, k2tog, k1                 (19sts)
Next Row:    S1, purl to last st, k1
Next Row:    K1, s1, k1, psso, k4, k2 tog, k1, s1, k1, psso, k4, k2 tog, k1                (15sts)
Cast off purlwise
Join top and side seam.  Darn away ends

4mm needles

Do not cut off each yarn after knitting a stripe – just carry it loosely up the side

Using 4mm needles and colour A, cast on 71sts
1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1
2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end
Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more
Join in colour B
Using colour B ~
11th Row:         Knit across row
12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Using colour A ~
13th Row:         Knit across row
14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Repeat the last 4 rows five times more
Using colour B ~
35th Row:         Knit across row
36th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1                          

Continue in the 2 colour stripe pattern

Shape the top ~

Row 1:             * K5, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1                           (61sts)
2nd, 4th,6th,8th &10thRows:  Purl
Row3:              * K4, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1                           (51sts)
Row 5:             * K3, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1                          (41sts)

Pattern:           Make two mittens the same
Do not cut off each yarn after knitting a stripe – just carry it loosely up the side

Using 4mm needles and colour A, cast on 29sts
1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1
2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end
Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more, increasing one stitch at each end of the last row (31sts)                          
Join in colour B
Using colour B ~
11th Row:         Knit across row
12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Using colour A ~
13th Row:         Knit across row
14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1
Repeat the last 4 rows four times more

  2. Hi. Do you have a gauge for the striped hat? I’m using a 4 yarn and 3 needles. I want to make sure it’s the right size. Thank you

    1. I used DK yarn (light worsted, Yarn weight #3 ) and 4mm needles. 22sts = 4" (10cm)
