Elgin Baby Hat

To fit a baby of around  0 – 3 months

Width:             6 “ (15cm)   12” (30cm) all around 
 

Height:           6 “ (15cm)

 

DK (8ply) yarn – or any yarn which knits to a tension of 22sts = 4” (10cm) over stocking stitch

 

4mm needles

 

This hat is knitted top-down

 

Cast on 7sts

1st Row:            Kfb every stitch            (14sts)

2nd Row:           S1, purl to last st, k1

3rd Row:           S1, *(kfb, k1), repeat from * to last st, kfb                  (21sts)

 

4th Row:           S1, purl to last st, k1

 

5th Row:           S1, *(kfb, k2) repeat from * to last 2sts, kfb, k1         (28sts)

 

6th Row:           S1, purl to last st, k1

 

7th Row:           S1, *(kfb, k3), repeat from * to last 3sts, kfb, k2        (35sts)

 

8th Row:           S1, purl to last st, k1

 

9th Row:           S1, *(kfb, k4), repeat from * to last 4sts, kfb, k3        (42sts)

 

10th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

 

11th Row:         S1, *(kfb, k5) repeat from * to last 5sts, kfb, k4         (49sts)

 

12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

 

13th Row:         S1, *(kfb, k6) repeat from * to last 6sts, kfb, k5         (56sts)

 

14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

 

15th Row:         S1, *(kfb, k7) repeat from * to last 7sts, kfb, k6         (63sts)

 

16th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

 

17th Row:         S1, knit to end

 

18th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

 

Repeat last 2rows until work measures 5 ½ ” (14cm)

 

Rib – change colour if you wish ~

 

1st Row:            S1, *k1, p1, rep from * to last 2sts, k2

 

2nd Row:           S1, *p1, k1, rep from * to end

 

Repeat these 2 rows twice more

 

7th Row:           S1, k1, * yrn, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, yrn, k1

Cast off loosely PURLWISE (I used a 5mm needle to make sure I had a loose cast off edge)

Gather together top. Sew up seam.  Darn away ends. Add a pretty button or a little ribbon bow.

  3. probably a goofy comment-I love this pattern (and all your patterns), but is there a way we can download it somehow in a "printer friendly" format? I just printed this out-it took 3 pages and sucked a ton of color ink from my printer cartridges. thanks.

    1. Hi Crafty1, you could highlight the pattern text, copy and paste into a word document and print it that way. I shall be knitting this pattern this weekend for my sisters baby due in feb, soo pretty.

    2. This is what I always do. Once I have downloaded it to a word document, I reformat it, usually into 2 columns. Resizing the font, shrinking pix, anything necessary to use less pages.

    1. Knit into front of stitch and without slipping it off the needle knit into the back of the same stitch. Slip off making an extra stitch.
