Babbity Jacket - Chunky Version

My Babbity Baby Jacket is very popular !  

From month to month, it is always in the 'Top 5' of favourited designs. 

Recently one of the members of my facebook page knitted a chunky version with a hood! It is lovely ! - and too good not to share !  

Chunky Hooded Babbity Jacket

Measurements ~
Size:        22" chest 
Length:    12" 
Sleeve length:  10" =    9“ after turning back the cuff 

Requires ~
2 strands of DK yarn knitted tog (around 330g - 350g)  OR UK chunky weight yarn 
6mm needles
3 buttons 

Instructions ~

Cast on 56sts
Rows 1 & 2     Knit
Row 3            K2, yrn, k2tog, (makes a buttonhole), knit to end of row
Rows 4,5 & 6         Knit
Row 7          K9, kfb, k1, kfb, k5, kfb, k1, kfb, k15, kfb, k1, kfb, k5, kfb, k1, kfb, k10     
Row 8          Knit                       64sts                   
Row 9          K10, kfb, k1, kfb, k7, kfb, k1, kfb, k17, kfb, k1, kfb, k7, kfb, k1, kfb, k11

Row 33        K24, slip next 34sts onto a stitch holder, k44, slip next 34sts onto a stitch holder, k24             (92sts) 
Knit 64 rows - work should now measure around 12" - it is easy to adjust the length here 
Cast off

Sleeves ~ Both Alike
Put the 34sts, left on a stitch holder, back on to a knitting needle.  Rejoin yarn.
With right side facing –

Knit 6 rows
Row 7          K2tog, knit to last 2sts, k2tog    (32sts)
Knit 7 rows
Repeat the last 8 rows 4 times more   (24sts)
Knit 28 more rows without any further shaping - work should now measure around 10" - it is easy to adjust the length here  
Cast off knitwise

Make the second sleeve in the same way
Sew up sleeve seams. Gather together underarms
Darn away ends
Turn back cuffs

Sew on buttons


Garter stitch hood (optional) ~

With the Right Side facing, pick up and knit 49sts from the neck cast on - (skipping the first 3sts and last 4sts of the neck cast on)

 

Row 1:             K23, kfb, k1, kfb, k23                         (51sts)

Rows 2, 3 & 4:           Knit

Row 5:            K24, kfb, k1, kfb, k24                         (53sts)

Rows 6, 7 & 8:           Knit

Row 9:            K25, kfb, k1, kfb, k25                         (55sts)

Rows 10, 11 & 12:     Knit

Row 13:          K26, kfb, k1, kfb, k26                         (57sts)

Rows 14, 15 & 16:     Knit

Row 17:          K27, kfb, k1, kfb, k27                         (59sts)

Rows 18, 19 & 20:     Knit

Row 21:          K28, kfb, k1, kfb, k28                         (61sts)

Rows 22, 23 & 24:     Knit

Row 25:          K29, kfb, k1, kfb, k29                         (63sts)

Rows 26, 27 & 28:     Knit

Row 29:          K30, kfb, k1, kfb, k30                         (65sts)

Rows 30, 31 & 32:     Knit

Row 33:          K31, kfb, k1, kfb, k31                         (67sts)

Rows 34, 35 & 36:     Knit

Row 37:          K32, kfb, k1, kfb, k32                         (69sts)

Rows 38 – 55:           Knit

Row 56:          K32, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k32                (67sts)

Row 57:          K31, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k31                (65sts)

Row 58:          K30, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k30                (63sts)

Row 59:          K29, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k29                (61sts)

Row 60:          K28, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k28                (59sts)

Cast off

Sew top of hood

Turn back edge


For the Ombre effect ~ I believe the colour change rows are 37 and 59 for the body 

and 5 and 25 for the sleeves.

  8. If I use single strand DK and 4mm needles what size would result? I would like to knit it for a 3-6 month baby if possible

    2. Hi there knitting this lovely pattern and have got to the part where I slip the stitches onto a stich holder for the first sleeve - it then says knit 44 - but do I break off the wool and rejoin to continue knitting or just carry on - I can't work out which way is the best - Help please :)
