Thanks for sharing your experience in this blog. Hand knitted baby hat patterns look so cool and babies love it too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for inclouding so many sizes for this hat. I am making hats for premature babies in Africa who have a hard time dealing with life in general and making it in life. God bless you for your endeavors and for sharing your design with us at no cost.
ReplyDeleteIm not familiar with YON and YRN Have never seen that before and I have been knitting for 50 years +
ReplyDeleteme either I am assuming yon means yarn over needle but have no idea what yrn means
DeleteYarn Round needle
DeleteTo Grandma Carol: YON and YRN are yarn overs. This link does a nice description of yarn overs between purl and knit stitches. http://sarahclements.com/2011/03/27/knitting/yarn-over-term-confusion/
ReplyDeleteI CO 37 stitches for the medium preemie hat and have worked through the pattern row 6. When I get to the end of row there are 4 stitches remaining after the knit 3 together. The same thing happened in the previous two rows where there was an extra stitch beyond the last 3 of p2, k1 or k3. Is the cast on number of stitches accurate or is there something missing in the pattern? This is a cute hat, but the pattern is not working.
ReplyDeleteI am getting the same results as you. Did you ever get a reply or were you able to figure out where we are going wrong?
DeleteAlso, I went to the site that Joanne referred Grandma Carol to (and several others) and it specifically states YRN is done between 2 purls stitches. That might be some my problem.

DeleteI also I have a problem with this pattern. Can someone please post how many stitches I should have at the end of each row? This may help in figuring out the pattern.
DeleteI had an issue at first also. The pattern repeat ends with a yon .... if you forget the last one before the last 3 stitches, you will always be short a stitch.
DeleteI am currently knitting the newborn size hat - at the end of row 3 there are 89 stitches which reverts back to 55 stitches on row 6. Hope this helps Brian Beckwith
DeleteBeautiful hat. Love the pattern..it makes a change not to have to do ribbing which is the worst bit for me. Is there any chance you will be adding a jacket or bootees too? X
ReplyDeleteThank you will give it a try as need few done as expecting twin grandchildren soon
ReplyDeletedo you ever create patterns using circular needles instead of sewing seams?
ReplyDeleteYou can easily convert to circular needles by simply joining the work on short circular needle and working the rows in rounds. This pattern callsfor purl rows between the decrease rows, so that you have the appearance of stockinette stitch. To preseve the look, simply knit the purl rows, since when working in the round you are always working on the right side. I've also made this hat and sewn the seem only part way, so I could add ribbon ties and turn it into a bonnet .... quite cute. Ope this helps.
DeleteDo you have a pattern for the flower too?
ReplyDeleteAt the top of this page, you can find Knitting Abrevations.
ReplyDeleteDid I miss the surpise LOL? Thanks, Marianne
ReplyDeleteYou will notice that each size has 6 more stitches and half an inch more pattern length than the one before it. I have successfully used this change to adjust the pattern for larger babies.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the surprise?
ReplyDeleteLol I was thinking the same, that's why I read through the comments x
DeleteMe too! The only surprise I got was that I had dropped a stitch a few rows down. I was able to correct it though. Now I am just about to sew it all together. I just did the little surprise jacket last month, in pale yellow. My son and DIL had a baby girl last week so now I have the matching hat and can girlie it up with a flower!
DeleteHi,do you have a pattern for the little flower? Would really love to be able to add flower to finish it off. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi, I also would like to know how to knit the flower as my daughter is having a girl and it would look so cute. Many thanks

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely pattern! Thank you for sharing. I have made nearly 50 hats for my local hospital's special baby care unit using your other patterns. I will definitely use this pattern to make more for them. Thank you. Xxx
ReplyDeleteLoved the finish hat.
ReplyDeleteOK. I give up. What is the surprise.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed knitting this hat and adding the flower too. I've also completed the jacket. So, so pretty
Can I download the pattern? I don't have a printer at home and want to be able to save the pattern as I'm not getting to it immediately
