All-in-One Baby Tops (6 months) and (9 - 12 months)

Back in February, not long after I started this blog, I posted the pattern for an all-in-one newborn baby top.
It has been really popular - always in my top ten popular posts - and lots of people have asked for a bigger size.
 
So here they are ......
 
All-In-One Baby Top (9 - 12 months)
 
 
All-in-One Baby Top (6months)
 


Each sleeveless top uses less than a 100g of DK yarn ~
The stripey one used 78g of Yarnfair Stripes DK - 75% acrylic, 25% wool
The turquoise one used 60g of acrylic yarn
The peach 6month size used 56g

 
 
All-in-One Baby Top      For a 9 - 12 months baby


The instructions are for a baby of around 9 - 12 months of age (20" chest)
The actual width is 22". The length is 11" (though this would be easy to alter)

Yarn  –  any DK  (tension 22sts over 10cm/4”)         


Needles  – 4mm throughout

Requires 3 small buttons

Worked from the neck downwards               

Cast on 78sts

Rows 1 & 2                  Knit
Row 3                          K2, yfwd, k2 tog, knit to end of row
Rows 4 & 5                  Knit
Row 6                          K5, purl to last 5sts, k5
Row 7                          Knit
Row 8                          K5, purl to last 5sts, k5
Row 9                          K10, *(yfwd, k2, yfwd, k5) rep from * to last 5sts,k5               96sts
Row 10                        K5, purl to last 5sts, k5
Row 11                        Knit
Row 12                        K5, purl to last 5sts, k5
Row 13                        K10, *(yfwd, k4, yfwd, k5) rep from * to last 5sts, k5             114sts
Rows 14, 15, 16          As rows 10, 11, 12
Row 17                        K10, *(yfwd, k6, yfwd, k5) rep from * to last 5sts, k5             132sts

Row 37                        K5,  *(k2, m1) rep from * to last 7sts,, k7                               159sts
Row 38                        K5, purl to last 5sts, k5                                                           
Row 39                        Knit
Row 40                        K5, purl to last 5sts, k5
Repeat last 2 rows until work measures 26cm (10 1/4 ”) in length
Knit 5 rows
Cast off loosely

Darn away ends

Width:             18”    (46cm)

 
Length:            10”       (25.5cm)

 

Yarn  –  any DK  (tension 22sts over 4”/10cm)      - requires 56g
Needles  – 4mm throughout

 
Requires 3 small buttons

 
Tips:

 
·         Cast off loosely on row 30 for the cap sleeves – if you find this difficult – use a larger needle

 
·         m1 (make 1) on row 33 – I do this by knitting into the front & back of a stitch – some knitters pick up the bar of yarn from the previous row – either way will be OK

 
·         yfwd – yarn forward seems to be a very UK term – you may know this as yo (yarn over) or yrn (yarn round needle). This makes the buttonholes and also the little eyelet holes on the yoke

 
·         For a nice variation rib the first and last 5 rows.

    I've never knitted anything of substance before, but started this and the neck is rolling to the front. What did I do wrong? So far, except for that, it's going good. I'm excited as long as I can figure out what I did wrong. Thanks for the free pattern!

      Hope this pattern worked out well for you. I don't have a problem with the neck rolling. Perhaps try using a bigger size needle?

      Hi Anna. m1 means make one - I do this by knitting into the front and then the back of the same stitch. (Other knitters make 1 in other ways too, it really does not matter which method you use - I just find it easy this way). Hope that helps. M

    Hi I'm knitting the size 9 - 12 months of this cardigan for a little lady who arrived into the world yesterday. I'm just confused by this line in the pattern
    Row 36 K5, purl to last 5sts, k5 (28sts for front, 54sts for back, 28sts for front)
    I'd appreciate any advice or help with this.

    For some reason row 9 yields 93 or more stitches when the pattern states that there should be only 91. I have tried this 5 times and I keep getting the same results, too many stitches. I have made sure that I did not do too many yfwd's or accidentally picked up any additional stitches, but I get the same results, too many stitches. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? thanks in advance for any help.

    For the 0-3 mos., I'm stuck on Row 29.Up to that row we are suppose to have 129 stitches, that's fine. But when I count Row 29 before doing it, there will only be 127 stitches to do. I do not see anywhere that there was a decrease before that. Has anyone had this problem? Any help will be most appreciated as my little sweater sits in anticipation of being finished :-) Thanks so much in advance.

    Hi Marianna, i just loved this pattern and i am making it for my niece. I am following size 6-9 months. Similar to other people i also got stuck in row 9 where I was also short of 4 stitches. However i moved on with the pattern in my own way but i dont understand row 36. Can you kindly explain what does [K5, purl to last 5sts, k5 (28sts for front, 54sts for back, 28sts for front)] mean? I mean i dont understand what does for 28sts for front, 54sts for backm 28sts for front mean? Please please explain. What i understand is i have to knit 5 then purl all the stitche leaving last 5sts which will be knit again. But what about the details in brackets? Also if you have time can you pls recheck and row 9 and all other rows where we have to bring the yarn forward as it does not come to the stitch count which is mentioned here. Your response will be highly appreciated. And keep helping us with ur nice patterns :)

    Hi Marianna, thank you so much for the pattern. I got to row row 37 on the 9-12 month size and started having trouble with thee stitch count. I started with the correct number of stitches (110) but after following row 37, I end up with only 142 st. not 159. I did it 3 times and even figured it out on paper and it still comes out as 142, unless I'm not doing it right. It's K2, make 1 in the NEXT stitch, or could it be K1 and make 1 in the 2nd K?

    Thank you so very much for this knitting pattern, Marianna - it's such a beautiful adaptable little item.

    Besides knitting for my own grandchildren, I also knit for nephews/nieces who are expecting babies and a Charity Shop that I work in. I've knitted it up as a Matinee Jacket, a Cardigan AND an Angel Top in various sizes.

    Great pattern, but as others have mentioned, the count in Row 33 is incorrect for Size 6 months also. Instead of (knit 3, make 1, it should be (knit 2, make 1).
