I did not invent this pattern - this and other variations have been around for many years - but I thought I would share how I make these.
Requires :
Small amount DK yarn
3.5mm or 4mm hook
This pattern is written using UK terminology
st – stitch, ch – chain, sl st - slip stitch,
sc - single crochet, dc - double crochet, tc - treble crochet
Instructions:

Start with ch4, join with a sl st. into first ch to
join
Round 1: ch3 (counts as a tc), (2tc, ch2, 3tc, ch2, 3tc, ch2, 3tc, ch2) into the ring, join with a sl st
Round 2: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 2sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 3sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, join with a sl st
Round 3: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 4sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 7sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, 1tc into next 2sts, join with a sl st
Round 4: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 6sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 11sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, 1tc into next 4sts, join with a sl st
Round 5: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 8sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 15sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, 1tc into next 6sts, join with a sl st
Round 1: ch3 (counts as a tc), (2tc, ch2, 3tc, ch2, 3tc, ch2, 3tc, ch2) into the ring, join with a sl st
Round 2: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 2sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 3sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, join with a sl st
Round 3: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 4sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 7sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, 1tc into next 2sts, join with a sl st
Round 4: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 6sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 11sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, 1tc into next 4sts, join with a sl st
Round 5: ch3 (counts as a tc), 1tc into next 8sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space, *(1tc into next 15sts, (2tc, ch2, 2tc) into next ch2 space)* repeat from * to * 3 times more, 1tc into next 6sts, join with a sl st
If desired ~ Work a row of single crochet all around, (3sc in each corner) –
to give a neat border
Cut yarn
Darn away ends
