'Milk and Sugar' Baby Blanket

This is a really sweet stitch pattern - and perfect for a baby blanket

'Milk and Sugar' Baby Blanket

Requires ~

DK yarn
4 mm and 4.5 mm needles

Size ~

Width – 16”
Length – 16”

Tension / Gauge ~

22sts = 4” (10cm), as worked over pattern

Instructions ~

For a premature baby blanket (or doll) ~

Using 4mm needles, cast on 87sts

To make this blanket bigger you will need to cast on 87 + (multiples of 4)

For a 24” newborn baby blanket cast on 135sts

For a 30” baby blanket cast on 163sts

Knit 10 rows (for border)

Change to 4.5mm needles for the Pattern ~

Row 1:    K6, * p1, k1, rep from * to last 5sts, k5
Row 2:    K5, * p1, k1, rep from * to last 4sts, k4
Row 3:    K5, * p1, k3, rep from * to last 2sts, k2
Row 4:    K6, * p3, k1, rep from * to last 5sts, k5
Row 5:    K6, * p1, k1, rep from * to last 5sts, k5
Row 6:    K5, * p1, k1, rep from * to last 4sts, k4
Row 7:    K7, * p1, k3, rep from * to last 4sts, k4
Row 8:    K5, p2, * k1, p3, rep from * to last 8sts, k1, p2, k5

Repeat the last 8 rows until you are happy with the length of the blanket - ending after a Row 2 or Row 6 - (I generally make blankets as long as they are wide)

Finish with a garter stitch border – change back to 4mm needles and knit 11 rows
Cast off knit wise

Darn away ends

  1. Hi I would love to knit this blanket. I have size 4mm and size 5mm needles. Is it possible to improvise or would I be batter to get the 4.5 as on pattern. If so would I be better sticking to 4mm or changing to number 5mm?

  2. Hi, I am wanting to knit this pattern for a new grandchild. I am thinking of using 24" circular needles and casting on the 163 stitches for the 30" blanket. The pattern looks so soft and squishy!

  3. Did I miss it? How much yarn for each size? Yards? Thank you

  4. I am in the middle of making this for my Niece who is having a baby at the end of April. I am really pleased with how it is turning out. Both sides are really nice. I am using King Cole Cotton Soft DK. Think this will be my turn to pattern in future for any baby blankets I make.
