Christmas Pudding Hats - for babies and children

Yes I know it is JUNE !!

But I was asked for this pattern by members of a charity group who are already preparing for the festive season!
 
Easy Christmas Pudding Baby Hat    ~     0 -3 months
 
 

Christmas Pudding Hats    For Babies and Children 

Each hat requires:

DK yarn in dark brown and cream for the hat

DK yarn in green and red for the holly leaves & berries

4mm needles

 

Tension / Gauge:

22sts = 4" (10cm) 




Christmas Pudding Baby Hat                      0 - 6 months

 

Size:  11½” circumference, 5½“  high


Using 4mm needles and brown yarn, cast on 65sts

Knit 8 rows

9th Row:           S1, knit to end

10th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat last 2 rows 8 times more

Cut off brown, join in cream

27th Row:         S1, knit to end

28th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

 

Shape the top ~
1st  Row:  (K6, K2 tog) repeat to last st, k1                 (57sts)
2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th  Rows:  Purl
3rd  Row:  (K5, K2 tog) repeat to last st, k1                (49sts)
5th  Row:  (K4, K2 tog) repeat to last st, k1                (41sts)
7th  Row:  (K3, K2 tog) repeat to last st, k1                (33sts)
9th  Row:  (K2, K2 tog) repeat to last st, k1                (25sts)
11th  Row (K1, K2 tog) repeat to last st, k1                (17sts)
12th  Row ( K2 tog) repeat to last st, k1                        (9sts)
Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up), draw the end through all stitches, pull up tightly.
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.

 

Holly leaves – makes 2 leaves joined together

Using green yarn cast on 1 stitch

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Knit 3 times into the stitch                              (3sts)

Row 3: Knit front and back into the first stitch, k1, knit front and back into the last stitch               (5sts)

Row 4:             Cast off 1 stitch, k3                                         (4sts)

Row 5:             Cast off 1 stitch, k2                                         (3sts)

Row 6:  Knit front and back into the first stitch, k1, knit front and back into the last stitch   (5sts)

Row 7:             Cast off 1 stitch, k3                                         (4sts)

Row 8:             Cast off 1 stitch, k2                                         (3sts)

Row 9:             Slip 1 stitch, k2tog, pass slip stitch over         (1st)

Row 10:           Knit 3 times into the stitch                              (3sts)

Row 11: Knit front and back into the first stitch, k1, knit front and back into the last stitch    (5sts)

Row 12:           Cast off 1 stitch, k3                                         (4sts)

Row 13:           Cast off 1 stitch, k2                                         (3sts)

Row 14:  Knit front and back into the first stitch, k1, knit front and back into the last stitch   (5sts)

Row 15:           Cast off 1 stitch, k3                                         (4sts)

Row 16:           Cast off 1 stitch, k2                                         (3sts)

Row 17:           Slip 1 stitch, k2tog, pass slip stitch over         (1st)

Fasten off

 

Berry

Using red yarn cast on 3 stitches

Row 1:             Knit in the front and back of every stitch                    (6sts)

Row 2:             Purl

Row 3:             Knit

Row 4:             P2tog three times                                                      (3sts)

Cast off purlwise

Tie cast on and cast off tails together (this pulls the berry together)

Christmas Pudding Hat           9 – 12 months                        

Size:  13¼“ circumference, 6¾“ high

 

Using 4mm needles and brown yarn, cast on 73sts

Knit 8 rows

9th Row:           S1, knit to end

10th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat last 2 rows 11 times more

Cut off brown, join in cream

33rd Row:         S1, knit to end

34th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat last 2 rows twice more

 

Shape the top

1st  Row:          (K6, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  64sts
2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th  Rows:  S1, purl to last st, k1
3rd  Row:         (K5, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  55sts  
5th  Row:          (K4, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  46sts              
7th  Row:          (K3, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  37sts              
9th  Row:          (K2, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  28sts               
11th Row          (K1, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  19sts              
12th Row          (P2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                        10sts                               

Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up), draw the end through all stitches, pull up tightly.
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.

Cut off brown, join in cream

35th Row:         S1, knit to end

36th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat last 2 rows twice more

2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th  Rows:  S1, purl to last st, k1
3rd  Row:         (K5, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                   61sts

7th  Row:          (K3, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  41sts              
9th  Row:          (K2, k2tog) repeat to last st, k1                                  31sts
