Kensington Hats



Kensington Baby Hat



Kensington Hats          baby, child, teen

DK yarn
4mm & 5mm needles

Tension ~ 22sts = 4” (10cm)

 
For a large premature, or early/small newborn baby


Size:
   
Width:    5 (13cm)   10 (26cm) all around 

Height:   5 (13cm)

 
Pattern:

Using 4mm needles, cast on 56sts

Border ~

Rows 1 – 7:   S1, knit to end

Row 8:   S1, purl to last st, k1

 
Change to 5mm needles and work in pattern ~

 
Row 1:   S1, knit to end

Row 2:   S1, *k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1

Row 3:   S1, *kfb, rep from * to last st, k1

Row 4:   S1, purl to last st, k1

 
The last 4 rows form the pattern

 
Repeat the last 4 rows 4 times more

 
Change back to 4mm needles

Shape the top ~
1st  Row:  (K6, K2 tog) repeat to end                        49sts
2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th  Rows:  Purl
3rd  Row:  (K5, K2 tog) repeat to end                        42sts
5th  Row:  (K4, K2 tog) repeat to end                        35sts
7th  Row:  (K3, K2 tog) repeat to end                        28sts
9th  Row:  (K2, K2 tog) repeat to end                        21sts
11th  Row (K1, K2 tog) repeat to end                        14sts
12th  Row (P2 tog) repeat to end                                7sts
Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up), draw the end through all stitches, pull up tightly.
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.


 


  


For a baby of 0 - 3 months

Size:
   
Width:    5½ (14cm)   11 (28cm) all around 

Height:   (14cm)

 
Pattern:

Using 4mm needles, cast on 64sts

Border ~

Rows 1 – 7:   S1, knit to end


Change to 5mm needles and work in pattern ~

Row 1:   S1, knit to end

Row 2:   S1, *k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1

Row 3:   S1, *kfb, rep from * to last st, k1

Row 4:   S1, purl to last st, k1

 
The last 4 rows form the pattern

 
Repeat the last 4 rows 5 times more


Change back to 4mm needles

Shape the top ~
1st  Row:  (K6, K2 tog) repeat to end                        56sts
2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th  Rows:  Purl
3rd  Row:  (K5, K2 tog) repeat to end                        48sts
5th  Row:  (K4, K2 tog) repeat to end                        40sts
7th  Row:  (K3, K2 tog) repeat to end                        32sts
9th  Row:  (K2, K2 tog) repeat to end                        24sts
11th  Row (K1, K2 tog) repeat to end                        16sts
12th  Row (P2 tog) repeat to end                                8sts
Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up), draw the end through all stitches, pull up tightly.
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.

 

For a baby of around 6 – 9 months
 

Size:

Width:    6½ (16.5cm)   13 (33cm) all around 

Height:   (16.5cm)


Pattern:

Using 4mm needles, cast on 72sts

Border ~

Rows 1 – 7:   S1, knit to end

Row 8:   S1, purl to last st, k1

Change to 5mm needles and work in pattern ~

Row 1:   S1, knit to end

Row 2:   S1, *k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1

Row 3:   S1, *kfb, rep from * to last st, k1

Row 4:   S1, purl to last st, k1

The last 4 rows form the pattern

 
Repeat the last 4 rows 7 times more

 
Change back to 4mm needles

Shape the top ~
1st  Row:  (K6, K2 tog) repeat to end                        63sts
2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th,12th Rows:  Purl
3rd  Row:  (K5, K2 tog) repeat to end                        54sts
5th  Row:  (K4, K2 tog) repeat to end                        45sts
7th  Row:  (K3, K2 tog) repeat to end                        36sts
9th  Row:  (K2, K2 tog) repeat to end                        27sts
11th  Row (K1, K2 tog) repeat to end                        18sts
13th  Row (K2 tog) repeat to end                               9sts
Cut yarn (leaving a long ‘tail’ to use for sewing up), draw the end through all stitches, pull up tightly.
Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends.

 

For bigger sizes ~

Follow the instructions for the 6months baby hat as written -  with the following adjustments to the number of stitches and rows ~

1-3 years            7½” total height   

Cast on 80sts, work until around 6” from cast on, finishing after a 4th row of the pattern, shape top         

 
4-10 years           8½” total height   

Cast on 88sts, work until around 7” from cast on, finishing after a 4th row of the pattern, shape top       


Teen/Woman    10½” total height

Cast on 96sts, work until around 9” from cast on, finishing after a 4th row of the pattern, shape top

  2. I just knit this in the round by alternating rows of k & p for the first 8 rows. Also with row 2: p2tog, & row 4: k (also incorporating the first and last stitches into the pattern). It is a very sweet pattern, and I’m thinking the new baby who is receiving it along with a matching sweater shall wear it proudly! �� Thanks for sharing your pattern!
